Rise of the Runelords

Festival and Fire; 21 Rova, AR 4713

And so our story starts...

This, then, shall be the chronicles of our heroes: Stal, scion of the House of Valdemar, sent north to learn the shipbuilding business from his cousin Belven Valdemar; G’leam, who travelled north in the hopes of delving into ancient knowledge with the assistance of the sage Brodert Quink; and Pova, Inquisitor of the Inheritor Iomedae, who seeks out injustice and evil to bring to light, wherever it would hide…

Having travelled together from Magnimar to Sandpoint our companions arrived the night before Swallowtail’s Release and attained lodgings at the Rusty Dragon and cemented their friendship over ales. The next day, after brief speeches by Mayor Deverin, Sheriff Hemlock and Father Zantus, the festivities commenced. Wandering around, observing the various games and contests – G’leam even took 3rd place in the Archery rounds – and partaking of the delicious treats, our friends whiled away the day in joy and laughter.

And then, a sharp retort, like the crack of distant thunder, sliced through the excited crowd as the sun’s setting rays painted the western sky. A stray dog that had crawled under a nearby wagon to sleep started awake, and the buzz of two dozen conversations quickly hushed as all heads turned toward the central podium, where a beaming Father Zantus took the stage. He cleared his throat, took a breath to speak, when suddenly a woman’s scream sliced through the air. A few moments later, another scream rose, and then another. Beyond them, a sudden surge of strange new voices rose high-pitched, tittering shrieks that sounded not quite human. The crowd parted and something low to the ground raced by, giggling with disturbing glee as the stray dog gave a pained yelp and then collapsed with a gurgle, its throat cut open from ear to ear. As blood pooled around its head, the raucous sound of a strange song began, chanted from shrill, scratchy voices.

GOBLINS! Dirty, filthy, little goblins! Racing through the crowds, indiscriminately slicing at people, animals – all the while shrieking their high-pitched, gleeful giggles. And here is where our heroes became just that: Heroes!
While most ran, horrified, terrified, and trying to save their own lives – our friends stood their ground, for people they did not even know. Knowing full well that they risked their own lives for the sake of strangers, with Stal and Pova nearly paying the ultimate price, they turned the tide and dispatched this foul infestation…
